I’m Labecca and this is Life Changes Coaching. My life dream as a second grader was to work with people, specifically teaching and I declared Primary education as my major in college. I soon learned that I preferred working with adults and changed my major the English with an emphasis in Creative Writing and was honored with an acceptance into the MFA program at Oklahoma State University where I honed my craft and began my dream of teaching at the collegiate level. My adventures in academia lead to a small community college in southern New Mexico, but I finally landed in Grand Junction, CO, the place I call home.

While my time as an Instructor of English at Colorado Mesa University broadened my horizons in terms of classes taught (anything from composition and creative writing to technical writing and a specialized class I created titled Violence in Literature and Society), I had a deep desire for more. It’s true that I was able to meet with students and mentor them in some ways, but I my ability to address sensitive issues was limited by my contract due to my position.

As the semesters drifted by and I said hello and goodbye to hundreds of students, some who I had hoped to connect with later in life, I began to wonder if there was a way I could help students in more personal ways. Many students had taken walks with me on campus or come to office hours to discuss declaring or changing their major. Some were pressured by parents to fulfill the family duty of becoming an engineer or lawyer instead of persue their own desires. Other students were nontraditional and had been away from school for years, feeling out of place and needed guidance feeling more at home on college campus. Some of my students were veterans facing challenges many of us cannot imagine.

Every person had a story and what I knew for sure was that I wanted to be part of it. Major transitions can be a thrill, but everyone needs a support system and everyone needs plan. Achieving goals can be the most exhilarating experience and I’m excited to help you realize your potential, your goals, and your authentic life. My approach is one of compassion, humor, and understanding. Life has a way of being many things folded into daily habits and minor decisions, that can break larger goals into manageable achievements so that what it is you desire becomes reality.
